And Here I am! At Rukka near Ranchi interning with KGVK  Living amidst vast stretches of farms growing anything from arwa rice to starchy potatoes, from luscious lychee to glowing mangoes, I feel like I have been picked up from my room and put in the middle of nowhere! The past few days have been quite a revelation. Getting to know the life in the real India. The India which we aren’t aware of, where the basic amenities seems to be a far cry and where 9% growth seems like a foolish statistic. I have been learning about the various projects that KGVK is involved in in their various pillars of the Total Village Management (TVM) initiative, but going to the field and meeting people is something that cannot be substituted with any amount of knowledge. Seeing how families below poverty line live and how even in 2011, major population is still dependant on primitive agricultural practices. Such an experience is something which has brought me here in the first place and it’s certainly living up to it!
My newly made friends and I here at KGVK made a trip to a village called Kinni in the block of Patratu (Jharkhand). We started off at 7 am in the morning as it was a long way to the village travelling more than 60 kilometres one way traversing the zigzag way across the mountains and the water reserve over the Patratu Dam. It was a calm spectacle with the still water and flat green lands void of any existence. Then later we reached the village where we soon met the village folk. Everybody started to gather around in the church courtyard, a somewhat pakka ground surrounded with walls made of red bricks haphazardly placed, barring any use of modern construction techniques. It seemed like a perfect setting for my first experience. People poured in and seemed to be at ease with the idea of KGVK coming to their village. Most of them greeted with a gentle smile.
And soon it all started. I was surprised to see people coming in even after it started wanting to hear what all it was about. It was like they were genuinely inquisitive about the day’s proceedings. One by one people from KGVK talked about the importance of knowledge. While the government schemes focused on helping directly with resources, KGVK wants to assist with knowledge empowerment. It sounded like the perfect analogy of giving you a fish to eat or teaching you how to fish; Teaching the people about sound agricultural practices, livestock rearing and the importance of sustaining their natural resources. Not just that, the meeting talked about the importance of working together in combating poverty, focus on making self-help groups and adolescent groups so that further government schemes can be employed for their benefit.
However, the people weren’t completely accepting the idea of such schemes making a real impact to their lives. They had previously reared goats within a self-help group but the experience turned sour as the goat died. Scepticism was pretty visible but KGVK realises it to be a slow and painful process. The process of them getting to understand the schemes and slowly being imbued into them. So here it began the process, from one village to another.

You think your life is as blemished as mine?

For once, I can’t be proved wrong. There’s no way in this world that you can challenge me when it comes to having a grotesque life. You may have faced many adversities. You may be an orphan or may have been a laborer. You may be a doctor whose emotions have been frozen by spending days and nights in a hospital or an engineer who faces stiff competition before he even thinks of putting one step forward. The fact-of-the-matter is you think of me as a disgusting, insignificant, vile and downright dirty pest. One thing you oafs don’t realize is how I might be your last hope when apocalypse would finally engulf us all. It’s because of you nincompoops that I know that I have the maximum probability of being alive even after human extinction.

If you still can’t realize who I am, it’s just an illustration of the underlying issue. I am a cockroach, you idiot! The girls would probably go “eww” right now. Yeah, I know we don’t have the Tom Cruise looks but it doesn’t mean we get treated like this. I have stood in front of the glistening marble tiles and discerned if there’s anything wrong with me. But there isn’t! If you’d care to talk to a caring Biologist who has had the fancy experience of dissecting one of my brothers, he would tell you how your pitiable six pack abs are no match for our sinewy structures. The long, aerodynamic and richly colored canopy probably hinders you from researching any further. The extended sense of smell has a knack of finding food within seconds. So while you curse your mum for hiding away your favorite chocolate, we would have already gorged on it. Not only do you need to learn from our gastronomical adventures but in a more important sense, wooing the fairer sex. Men pursuing them are one of the most distressed things I’ve seen in my life. Poor things have to dance on the whimsical plans of the ladies. Whereas, we just use the invincible weapon and she-roach has no chance of escaping the trap. The weapon is called pheromones, my dear friend.

In the early days of my life, to simply put, I was innocent. Hatred, anger, frustration, vengeance. These words were not known to me. But as I grew and saw families tumbling or more literally being squished, washed, battered and choked to death by heartless beasts, a more resilient and bold being within me started to evolve. In fact the training which I then underwent at the Roach Grounds is only a match to the Jihad training which Al-Qaeda talks of with their chests ballooned out. I became part of a greater enterprise and started organized roacharism (I walked across terrorism in the newspaper and the word swept a wave of inspiration, great enough to start a daring venture). Since I am an Indian cockroach and we all share the same love for plagiarism, I started the Roacharist movement. Soon the word spread out and I had some friends who shared the same sentiments. Sentiments led to initiating actions. We filed in a charter and applied for permissibility from the High Roach Commission. We presented the main objectives of our Movement:

· To indulge in unlawful and illegitimate activities including infesting of the drainage system, taking control over the kitchen and the washrooms eventually leading to total dominance of the house.

· Being part of random acts of random roaming within the house causing the female occupants to regularly swoon at our sight and hence distress their male counterparts.

· To be all in all proud of the Roacharist Movement and aid any roach in need.

I must say the movement has been a quite a breakthrough. We have successfully raided the kitchen many times. Hearing the sweet music of screaming ladies in the morning has come as a welcome gift. Blocked the poo drains and made the humans pay for their legalized crime dearly. But today is a special day for Roacharists. For we are going to go where no roach has gone before. Attempt what my ancestors could only dream of. The Place which is a regular visitor to our dreams. The mission today is Braving the Cold. We will have to face temperatures that might freeze us all but its something that we must dare to attempt. This will definitely pave the way for our legacy.

Braving the Cold is about breach of an appliance. Due to faulty wire, it sometimes loses electricity during the night and with the little help from the miss who forgets to shut the door close, we will be able to make our move and enter the realm of limitless possibilities. If all goes as planned, we will start by 23:00 hours tonight.

We waited in utmost patience for the time to arrive. Standing steady and head held high, we waited for the time to make a move. A huge army waited for the signal, all huddled up into immaculate lines. With their two hairs pointing upwards full of energy and spirit.

“Go!Go!Go!”, came the call and the army started to pour out of the burrows making the long journey through the plains towards the destination of our dreams. Inching closer and closer, we moved in capriciously through the dark of the night. Reaching the tall daunting structure, we puffed and started climbing on the smooth surface testing our vacuum feet capabilities to the maximum. Some slipped away but most of us held their ground and made their way inside. The atmosphere made us jittery for temperatures that low were definitely unhealthy but our olfactory cells pressed in us renewed vigor. I felt a dizziness getting hold of me for I was drowning in the intoxicating smells of countless dishes. We had made it! We had reached the insides of a fridge.

My brothers could not believe what they saw! Food.And it was everywhere. Some of us went for the leftover pizza. Some couldn’t resist the tempting brownie all decked up on the side. Then there was the chicken to dip into. Rolling across the lemon was something I wished to do since my childhood days. It was all so good to be true. Too good infact. Suddenly, a thud was heard and then we all looked back in horror towards the towering figure which stood there rubbing his eyes. It was Mr.Sharma. Even though he had never screamed on the sight of a roach, this was too much for him to fathom. He let out a big scream, which was loud enough to wake up his wife. “Code 31! Code 31!” I shouted out loud. Then I ran out of the zone leaving out a trail of scent which meant trouble! Code 31 meant human danger and we all could see him right there.

Braving the cold had lost steam. I did manage to escape Mr. Sharma’s leather sandals which he mercilessly used to kill twenty two of my daunting men. Even though we were squashed, we have embellished human history. To give you a taste of this impact, Madonna, the pop singer, went out in the public so impressed by this incident and said, "I am a survivor. I am like a cockroach, you just can't get rid of me."

Every one of us has some kind of inhibitions. Those small absurd things that makes you or me a unique identity. I am going to share one of those today. Something I managed to shed over the weekend. The special people. People who are not blessed with things we so carelessly take for granted. Who has the time to ponder over such trivial issues anyway? When we were adolescents, it was about getting maximum stars from the teacher. By high school it was about winning competitions and being the head boy. With entrance exams, it was getting to the topmost rung of the ladder even before the struggle would make an inception.

I searched for the meaning of life. The Holy Google showed me this:

the experience of being alive; the course of human events and activities; "he could no longer cope with the complexities of life"

Hmm, well isn’t that a bit ironical. I’ll tell you how. The only statement that could have been used as an assertion to existence of life actually talks about ending it.

Yes! That’s what life is. An endless endeavor.

Here we are drowned in the seas of emotions. Getting a job or an Ivy League college or whether we make the “CAT” meow.

That’s what clouds are minds. Well my clouds poured their heart out when I went to Samarth the other day. It’s a residential care centre for mentally challenged. Let’s go back to my inhibition. It was how I didn’t want to hurt these kids with my actions and come out as cold and rude because I have so much respect for them. I want to help them but I thought I’d cringe at seeing them. So there I went in, just like a gladiator who enters the coliseum, and stands there waiting with utmost patience thinking he might get devoured any moment soon. Only difference is I did not have a sword or wore heavy armor but was armed with coca cola bottles, pastries, drawing colors to have the best Independence Day celebrations of my life.

As we entered, we hid the stuff in the cupboard and then started drawing with them. I shirked at first, but I had to be strong. There was somebody crying, it seemed like he wanted to cry for some reason or the other. He was like I m crying for the people in Ahmadabad and I was a bit taken aback.Anyway, we went back out. I was told to sit with Seema to help her draw. She would color a bit and then hold it up to show me if she was doing well. I would nod and grin like a wondrous fool. She saw people’s arm getting painted and suddenly drawing was not sport enough. She perched forward and through the sheet away and made a run for the painting area. By then somebody had broken a crayon and another one was laughing hysterically and showing off the tri-color that had embellished her arm. That smile on their faces. Priceless.

Colors and music. Languages of the world. What a wonderful infusion that knows no bounds and needs no comprehension.

As you can guess, we played the music for them. The hyperactive Seema was at it again. She was like I m a “ ganda bacha”. Everybody else was her brother and she would drag them, sometimes with abnormal amount of force, to a dance. Soon people were joining in. Somebody would flail their arms. There was this small girl. All she wanted to do was jump up as high as she could. So I’d hold her arms and up she went. She was quite young too. The reminiscent of my childhood seem to float back. Counting all the stars I had got………….Soon we poured in the colas and served out the pastries. Everyone ate their share. No stealing, No throwing around, No messing around. They didn’t know the usual etiquettes which we are inborn with but they didn’t do any of that. I was baffled. They’d just come inside the room and if you’d ask them if they want a cola they would take it and go back. Not that we had caught them playing and running away with the bottles in the first place but it was just “shock and awe”. Here were people who were free to play any amount of tricks on us but there were no tantrums to be seen, no traces of disrespect .All they gave was a smile. An honest delicate smile that genuinely felt like a thank you. Out of Samarth there is a selfish cruel world. A devil’s den. A coliseum. Where any moment can be your last.

My inhibition was crumbling. I danced with Seema and was soon pushing people onto the dance floor. The local favorites took turns to play on the stereo. Music filling up the small enclosure. As it spread, it caught hold of them, tight in its clutches, and made them jive. There was a new entrant to Samarth who was not bedazzled by the music’s mystique. She would cry out in a burst at any random instant. While I was lost in my thoughts, this guy tucked on my shirt and said “phell”. I couldn’t understand and my friend was quick to aid me, “He wants your phone.” The guy soon had the phone close to his ears listening to “hum hain is pal yahan” and gave out a beaming smile back at me.By now, I was seema’s brother too and she was giving all of us tight hugs.

Soon people gathered around this guy who didn’t participate in anything .Everybody was coaxing him to sing a song. Every song came to a sudden end. Every shout was shushed. After a long time, he finally broke into some famous actor quotes. Claps ensued. Even the new entrant laughed in her own way and everybody looked in astonishment at her. I was sitting at some distance on a chair looking at him. My bulb glowed. This was his JEE exam. This was his CAT. My eyes gave way to a tear. Inhibition came to a clattering end. There were no jobs for the taking, No salaries to be earned, No professors to please. Just a simple sentence that made him a star.

As soon as that happened, rain began to pelt down. I was still in my own maze. People who care for them. Life’s a bitch.

Soon we packed up our stuff and made a run out for our vehicles. Everybody waved bye. Everyone.

My heart was filled with happiness. The joy of making them smile for few hours is going to be etched in my heart for a long time.

Money Talks

I lay atop Dhaniram’s cold chest. It wasn’t moving and the beating of his heart had stopped. Lying flat on the checkered network of sewn bamboo sticks of the premier quality was MLA sahib, Dhaniram Gupta. Suited in the same kingly attire he wore while he was shot dead by the local mafia, his life had come to a rather subtle end. An end which people were very surprised to witness even though the inevitability of it all can hardly be questioned. For Dhaniram was in constant communication with the gang leaders and the “high-ups” in the government. He was the Middle Man but this time he had taken too much time, something the mafia couldn’t afford. Along with Dhaniram, my life came to a close. It had been a long life and I remember each and every moment of it. As people started piling up coarse wood on top of his body..

Out into the world! I travelled through the streets witnessing the society of homo sapiens, a splendid spectacle of generations. Years of evolution, technology and sheer intelligence brought me to play a role in the lives of a large number of people rather too significantly. The significance that took me sometime to completely comprehend. I was happy, like a toddler is when he speaks his first words or when a bird first learns to fly. The sheer excitement of what future promises. I settled into my first home stashed with my other friends. The house had long walls with paintings decked on them, people with effluent tastes and a Chihuahua who seemed to own it all. I had a special place to myself where only the adults of the family would be allowed. That was when I realized I happened to occupy a unique place in their lives.

Then I was woken up from my cozy bed and taken along with the lady. The chauffeur driven car stopped at a red light and in a jiffy appeared this little girl wearing a torn cloth blackened by the exhaust of the passing-by cars. Her face was hidden beneath the grays and the pearl like tears that fell unconsciously from her eyes. The lady drowned in sympathy for this ‘human’ and handed me over. I was shattered. I felt so useless, like a cover of an ice cream cup, so nonchalantly strewn away. I looked up at the girl with a snare but her expressions had taken a drastic change. The tears had vanished and a mighty grin took its place. She jumped up in the air and held me high. Then she continued to gaze at me with wonder. I was perplexed for I could never imagine myself being an object capable of inciting so much curiosity. I thought everybody knew how I looked like. She then held me close to her heart. I could hear it beating very fast. Running fast along with her, she took me far away from the madding crowd. Deep into the smelly lanes of sewerage laden shacks and entered one of them. She sat on one of the protruding stone and continued to look at me with amazement. She pulled me in close and touched me with her rough lips which hadn’t been cleansed for a long time. I felt out of place , really disturbed to be in this hole but the love with which this poor girl seemed to bestow me was nothing I had seen in my fancy house. Her warmth was overpowering.

Alas! The love was short-lived for my excited owner made the mistake of spreading the news of my presence. Soon the innocent girl was made to forcefully part from her life’s major accomplishment. There I went into a rollercoaster ride of the bullies, the workers to the middle class families to shopkeepers and to the rich brats. To the good and the ugly of society. Travelled through facets of the ugly structure that the humans had formed. My journey continued at the panwaala’s shop. The panwaala, took me in his hands which had been darkened by the gooey liquid that smeared it, the aroma of the herbs and tobacco that forms the basis of the delicacy which sells in millions every day, tucked me deep in his pocket. I could hardly manage to get some sleep in this olfactory explosion. But soon I changed hands and it was going to be for the better. For I was told I was going to be part of a pompous occasion. I once again felt that sense of significance. That feeling which satisfied my hunger for flattery. Taken inside a large shed and kept on the table for scrutiny, I began to wonder if I had been fooled. For here I saw large men laughing hard and pouring their tall glasses with a golden liquid. I had never seen it before but I was convinced it was the peculiar liquid that was responsible for their giggly extravaganza.

They started to push me into a line. I retaliated. They weren’t bothered to see me slipping away. One of the guys pulled me back, held me up and looked at me intently. “Arey, yeh toh asli hai” and all of them broke into a fit of laughter. That was enough to give me a seizure. I was terrified and fell back unconscious. The break of dawn woke me up. I couldn’t believe what had happened to me. I had been tied down by a thread! It was horrifying for I couldn’t move an inch. Then somebody pulled me out and I came down from the darkness out into a massive crowd. I saw people held back by a rope cheering their hearts out. “Dhaniram ki Jai! Dhaniram ki Jai!” everybody shouted. Soon I saw myself on top of Dhaniram, the leader of the region who had taken out a procession to address their issues. What problems were actually resolved remains a mystery. Bang! Bang! Dhaniram fell back onto the horse carriage he was travelling on and the deafening cheers were transformed into a shocking silence. Their leader had been shot…..

Dhaniram’s son came forward and lit up his pyre. Dhaniram always wanted to be covered with his richly possessions and so was his wish fulfilled. I am a hundred rupee note whose charred remains would mix with the ashes of a powerful leader….

But only in the sweet freedom in the realm of dreams can men be truly happy

How many times have you woken up in the morning with a big grin on your face only to realize after some time that it was JUST a dream? When you struggle to come to terms to the fact that such a clear picture was all just a figment of imagination. You say to yourself, “was it really a dream?” Sometimes we even end up convincing ourselves of it happening some time back in our lives because we want it to happen howsoever unrealistic it might be. But the question I ask You, my friends, does that make us truly happy?

Good morning judges and my dear friends, I am Gagandeep Singh Bhatia and I’ll be speaking against the motion, “But only in the sweet freedom in the realm of dreams can men be truly happy.”

I’ll admit to the fact that no human being on this whole wide planet is glad with their lives. The human mind is witness to countless events everyday and it maps them so precisely that with just a small pause we can recall them. Without the feelings of nostalgia or retrospection I think we would be quite lost. That is why every night when we close our eyes, we travel through to this meticulous land knitted by our mind whose thread is made of our desires, our aims , our expectations and our inhibitions. We might see ourselves falling into a deep pit or flying high with the albatross, it’s our mind and it’s our soul. No one can negotiate their dreams. No government or legislature can curtail them. It’s just that sense of independence.

Freedom, oh so sweet freedom, the power to act without any imposed constraints.. The power to act or perform as our will imposes on us. The exuberant feeling of unchained liberty. Freedom might differ in its definition for different people. For an average man it might be just about being safe and for a rich man, it would mean much more for freedom would culminate various luxuries of life without which he might not really feel “free”.

Even though freedom in reality might be subjective in nature, it’s the liberty in the realm of dreams that really makes us common. You could be a rickshaw puller or an investment banker, the fact of the matter is you realize that you have to go back to your respective lives once you’re out of the cozy boundaries of your dreams. For that instinctive moment, you might be fooled into a feeling of happiness but it’s a just façade. A face which can only last that long.

Jack Kerouac, the famous writer of the Beat Generation, said, ““Avoid the world, it's just a lot of dust and drag and means nothing in the end.”

The Beat Generation was considered to be the bohemian hedonists who celebrated non conformity and spontaneous creativity inspiring rejection of mainstream values of society. They transformed a whole era of hippies for whom realm of dreams was enough to be content. We might be here today debating whether today’s motion is indeed true or not. My opponents’ arguments might still be strong but my friends, an entire by gone era of sixties realized that it was not to be. AN ENTIRE GENERATION.

All of them did come to terms to the fact that being even partially happy in reality was a better proposition then living in your own sweet free world. The same generation did give birth to a new league. A league of entrepreneurs, executives, economists, politicians, marketers etc

Close encounters of the winter kind

Yeah it’s that time of the season again when you can make out every tick of the tick tock clock, when the lizards and the roaches have buried themselves deep into the cool sand and slept away the cold, when your warm feet under the quilt feel like heaven, when the pot (yes that one) feels too damn cold to take a crap and when the wakeup call by your mom seems the most annoying sentence you’ll hear all day even at 1 pm in the afternoon.

Yes, it’s the winters. Thanks to us humans and global warming winters are a short spectacle these days. Even then they make sure their presence is felt. The winters come strong with cold breeze and foggy mornings. The golgappe walla who had people lining up for the curd topped over the chat and the chana and the lip smacking chutney tikki, today, rubs his hands over and over again serving to a few foodies who dare to brave the cold for the delightful snack. Even though the Soup walla is seen scampering around delivering soup to people buried up in their swanky cars.

The worst thing that can happen to you is if you have to drive a two-wheeler in the winter cold. Trying to cover yourself with clothes is a futile effort for the wind knows its ways. Most of the times it’ll squeeze in through one of the rolled up ends of your t-shirt and your hapless skin will bear the full brunt of the icy wind.

How’s the winters treating you all though? Anybody with better luck? Well it depend’s on the fact as to whether one likes to sleep or not and if your low on sleep like me, then you’re in a bit of a situation. I’m running out of ideas and hiding under my quilt all day so HELP!

A boy and his something special

This is the story of a boy and his something special.

The Boy made binoculars out of his hands and looked out of the window. The small window which had been chewed off at ends by the termites and was creaking along the hinges ready to fall off any second. His gentle young hands clasped into unruly circles trying to look far outside the house. He couldn’t see much but it hardly mattered. At his age, every bit of the world was fascinating. Every object brought zeal of exploration. For his parents, the boy was a nuisance since he poked his nose in everything they did and made their lives a living hell. They were obviously living the clichéd life of a married couple who had kids to deal with. And this was their boy. The curious kid whose curiosity was too much to be handled by outgrown adults.

He wanted to know why does the rainbow have so many colors and how does his shoes have laces and why cannot he watch television after nine in the night and why can’t he sleep in the soft pointy blades of green grass. So when he got kicked out of the house because he asked too many questions, he pouted and ran out into the lush green garden. The garden decorated with gladioli, sunflowers and aesthetic creepers provided with the shade of an adult mango tree. The enriched environment of the garden was able to turn the mood of many. For the cruelty of sunshine to the devastating effects of the tempests could not be felt in such beauty. Lying flat on the garden bed he looked up. He wondered where the stars go in the morning and how can they just run back to their positions in the night? He felt annoyed with himself and started to doubt his own conscience. Why does he want to know all the answers? Why can’t he live with all the things that are taught to him? Why does he keep asking those pestering questions? He felt the confidence of his own will being questioned.

He flipped onto one side and saw an outgrowth out of the concrete. The garden overflowed with the flora, the scent of the rarest of flowers, the wooden swing which pushed the wind across his face when the innocent boy ran up and down the grass to give himself a push and giggled instantaneously, as sensitively like a touch-me-not plant. Now everything was pushed to the backside. How could a flower come out of concrete? There were four slabs of concrete intermixing into each other and out of intersection sprang out a young outgrowth just like the boy, such a dare move just like his daunting questions.

He had never fed his thirsty flowers in the garden but he ran inside into the kitchen. Jumped as high he could, grabbed a rusty glass and poured in the rushing fresh water out of the tap. Then scampered back and sat close to the outgrowth. Slowly poured water onto the sides and grinned. He had no idea what it would do but he had seen his mom do that to the rest of the garden so he figured he might help this poor creature out of the concrete.

He watered the outgrowth every day. Not one day passed would he forget to pour the elixir. Outgrowth slowly rose higher and higher. And every time he saw it rise, it would give him more happiness in his life than anything else did. He seemed to fulfill the purpose. What was the purpose, nobody knows but there was a sense of satisfaction in his heart.

The boy had frustrated everybody in his purview. Even his friends thought of him as a fool, stupid enough to be talking about a shoot growing out on the other side of his garden.

As he was slowly straddling back to his home after stepping down from his yellow school bus, he saw something spectacular. He dropped his bag and ran towards it. Slid across it and smiled wide. Slowly moved around it and rubbed his cheek onto its smooth surface smelling the intoxicating aroma. It was gorgeous. It was completely red, not a speck of imperfection. It was a rose. Such a spectacle!

He had nurtured it. It was His rose. He didn’t want to trade it with anything in this world. It made him ecstatic and everyday he would play with it, tickling its slender stem and getting a rub back from its gentle green leaf. He could never imagine himself without the rose. His life felt accomplished. It felt like he was right somewhere. His honest innocence found a witness in its form.

And then one day, he came back home from school and ran to meet his flower. The exquisite rose. He bowed down close to the rose and then screamed out loud, “Aaaoow!!” He had streak of blood oozing out of his cheek. It hurted a lot and it made him cry. How could the rose do that to him? He could have never imagined a thorn coming out something so utterly splendid. It had cut into his cheek and scratched it out.

Like all his other questions, he could never know why was there a thorn in a rose?

What I am doing right now is conforming with the situation given to me. These rules were made for a reason and wouldn’t I be called a fool if I didn’t follow them?

Good evening, jury members and my dear fellow friends, I Gagandeep Singh Bhatia, stands in front of u to express my views on, “To conform is to enervate” and I stand strictly against the motion.

Yes, I would be foolish to do that. Conform is the ability of an individual to adjust, a significant skill which tells you to live by the norms. A child grows out from the hands of a mother out into the vast expanse of society. He is told to do certain things in a fixed manner. Even simple things like eating or talking need to be taken care of. A person who doesn’t learn the same is termed uncivilized. And somebody who hasn’t learned will certainly not be able to teach others. This is where his connection with society is damaged.

A change can only be brought if we know what we want to change and we know what we want to change only if we have experienced it. So to say, change can only happen after we can follow something and understand it completely. Saying that we can understand and skip directly to leading will end disastrously.

The Great, Mahatma Gandhi, became part of the Indian system and joined Indian politics before raising his voice. If we are to say that as a lawyer he were to arrive in India and start ordering people what to do ,I wouldn’t be hesitant to say that his theories would have never taken off.

Alfred Whitehead has rightly said, “The art of progress is to preserve order amid change and to preserve change amid order.”

Enervate refers to how something can cause the loss of vitality. Something that steals strength from you. This 21^st Century world that we live in gives us a hectic fast paced life and we all agree that it keeps on changing every day of our lives. To say that adapting to these changes causes us to lose the inbuilt qualities would be foolish. Just to hang out there today we need to be on our toes. Every man and woman is like a soldier armed with a weapon in their hand standing in the middle of desert helplessly trying to defend themselves against enemies from every side possible. I say aligning oneself to what is told is a challenge in itself and a challenge which cannot be overlooked. It is not enervating but a tool for empowerment.

Let us look at it from the other way. What comes to our mind when we think of people who didn’t regulate themselves with the times? People like Adolf Hitler, Mussolini or Stalin come into the fray. Is that the change we want to bring to the society? A change that says cruelty is the rule of the day?

Management is one of the most important qualities to have today. Managing our lives, managing our offices, managing with people they all require you to think and make u work for it. It is a continuous exercise of your brain. All the same the world recognizes this and perhaps this is the reason managerial positions are given higher salaries and better status in today’s society. Now what do you think lies beneath management, it is after all, getting acclimatized to the situation and acting in the best possible way.

We see how important it is to adapt to our life and change can only take thereafter but they don’t enervate you. In fact they form an important part, an indispensible skill to have and a skill certainly worthy of its nature. So don’t be disheartened if you have to obey the rules next time you go out of your home.

“There is no point of discussing this if you cannot feel what I feel. You need to use your heart and not the mind”, said Tzongpa. “You have to close your eyes, clean your head of every thought and feel”.

“Have you ever questioned why you are leading your current life? Do you know about your real purpose? Why are you here today alongside billions of people on the planet? Did your life give you time to think about what you wanted to do? Did you ever actually make a decision to do something on your own? Did it bring happiness?”

Aalesh and Tim stared at each other. “Have you ever felt like you can see your body moving, like a video game, going about the daily grind? Why do you get up every morning, brush and go to work? Why do you work for ten hours every day? With no time to ponder, you have never really questioned your routine.” They felt a shiver. Tzongpa continued in his deep icy voice and heavily accented English, “From Stone age, man has come a long way to develop a world in which the simplest of things like being able to survive has b’come so hard that nobody has a clue to what they are really pursuing. You look up and all you see are tall man-made steel structures. Sparkling glass squares fit neatly into a maze of floors running up till the clouds and below are humans scurrying around like little ants. Imagine sitting on a magic carpet being able to see everybody from top. This huge world with humans literally coming out of every possible corner of land deemed feasible to live". They continued talking but soon came to being devoured into sleep by the thought of what lies ahead…

Not that they were persistently shuddering due to the icy winds, but due to the thought of deeper realization. The fire was lit in bare minimum oxygen and it could go off any moment. Breathing was difficult but all this was inevitable. This is what they had trained for. They are here today only because they made the choice to not be confined within their cozy pointless lives. They left everything in search for the real meaning of life. They began trekking and soon developed love for climbing hilltops. Today with years of experience in trekking and mountaineering, they’ve ended up climbing the most gruesome of mountains.

So they are here today, sitting on campsite C4 at a height of about eight thousand metres and one step away from the summit. C4 was one of the several mid-stops on the way to climbing the Savage Mountain aka the mountain of mountains, Mount K2. It has been aptly named as one of every four mountaineers has died while trying to tame its heights. Getting used to the continuous shiver was a small part of the deal. Sitting close to each other huddled, they looked around. Chest deep snow, jagged edges, threatening cliffs, crevasses, unforgiving seracs …the list was endless. Only yesterday had they heard the news of one of the seracs giving way at the ‘bottleneck’. Bottleneck was the last and the most unforgiving path to the top. At more than twenty eight thousand feet, there is no second chance. Most of the mountaineers on the support line were crushed or are reportedly missing including Antonio, Tim’s new found friend from Italy whom he had met on the base camp.

Having waited for several days for the weather to clear up, the trio finally had some luck with the heavens opening up. Climbing K2 is gruesome mostly because of the harsh weather and rougher terrain compared to the other ‘Eight Thousanders’. Tzongpa, the Sherpa who was leading the way started the ascent and ‘broke the trail’ for the climbers following him on the line. It was a long journey ahead to the summit. It would be almost another twenty hours before they get any rest again. With every forcible dig into the sea of ice, he perched forward trying to balance the weight of his bagpack. Stoves, food, bottles, shoes, sleeping mat and pitching tent all on his back!

Each one of them continued pushing through the snow over the long drawn path. Climbing over inclines of as much as seventy degrees, one glance below would be enough to make even the bravest souls to swoon. Tzongpa came about a hindrance on the path. The deep crack separating the path by several feet. He was awed by the splendor of the crevasse. Hanging onto the ice breaker, he looked into the beautiful colors of sparkling ice glistening in the sun. The fissure continued for as long as the eye could see. Tzongpa felt a chill down his spine when he pursued himself into looking down from the rich hues into the darkness that waited below. One couldn’t see the end really. Gathering up courage he set up the line to begin its conquest. It wasn’t the first time he was doing this but this was different. This was mount K2. He could see the clouds floating in the distance and the wind had started to pick up somewhat.

He continued his trek over the crack that cut into the core of the earth. Aalesh and Tim continued and caught up on the pass. They took a breather, digging their pointy iron rods into the snow. Tim was a bit worried as one of the front spikes on his snow shoes had given way. Getting grip was suddenly much harder than ever. He paused for a moment looking at the spectacular view. The Himalayan peaks looked like pointy pins enveloped in ice. Then trying to move out of his position, he pushed into the ice….

“TIM!! The ice..”, Aalesh shouted while rushing towards the opposite end. Tim’s gone. The slab of ice on which he was standing gave way and that was it. The moment that separated him from being alive a split second before. They heard his scream before the abrupt calm. Aalesh glanced at Tzongpa. None of them said anything. This was it. The moment of truth. They just stood there with an enlightened look on their faces. The meaning of life suddenly became vivid…They both looked to the top of the summit. The bottleneck, the Traverse and the Summit.

back again... Yea I am not so good with blogs...
Back again after a long time...

Lots of things learned and experiences encountered. Yeah I had a wonderful time and something I'll keep with myself all my life. :)
it felt really good ...a sense of accomplishment when i flipped over the packet of my passport. there was no letter.

just a stamp of approval ...of life... of achievement.
and so it was.

They make you learn geography and names of countries and places ...newfoundland, perth and the scandinivia but you have no idea what it actually is all about..
for you it's just another chapter and another portion of text to be crammed up in the head which feels like it has no real value or importance ever.

They never teach you the real consequences of information ....all through you're education...that disillusionment...
Butonce you actually end up realising once a while you REALLY feel good. you feel good that you knew.

Seeing the plane land in a different country...the meaning of a world outside your city ....how things can be different...its truly something else...not that they are better or india is worse ...thats completely different but the whole sense of a world outside your world...
so many people living their own lives with their own social circles and their own issues...its just makes you wonder ...you're like a small fish in the pond...

There's so much to do in this world ...so many things to see...so many people to meet and you can never have enough
but everybody is not thinking like that...people have a life and they live it...
generations live out in the same place...they are just there all their lives...contended. I dont know how. It's a confusing feeling.

Life is such a kaleidoscope.
for it holds a power of exploration. There are so many people in this world and over generations have evolved to do things so different and yet so aligned to the basic necessities. There are scientists who have developed theories which the next generations will read and admire. There are musicians who will hit those riffs or the beauty of music, the essence of lyrics and compositions of instruments to make those pieces of art for people to admire for all times to come. There are artists who's admiration for all that combined in this world, the nature, or how the flower blooms is exquisite. The evolution of nature, the species, the adaptation of life. It's all so exquisite. Don't you wish you were part of it all?
Wouldn't you want to enjoy those things of life and reach up to your aims monetarily?
What is it that stops then you then?
Why can't you work on them? why do you have to admire Jeff Beck for his skills but not able to work 16 hours to practise them on your own?
Is it that your not committed enough or you Want to do it but you still dont do it.
What can be the possible reason for it?
What is that makes you think you want to be there or not?
how does the average person and not being an average person equation work on an individual level?

Theres a question that makes you ponder why and how the character of a person is molded into a particular shape. How does it happen to take a stance on subjects over the years. How it can vary to a considerable extent and how can people decide whether they like a particular trait out of the whole character.
The best part is how people do not actually decide to look into the whole character but base their assumptions as to the way they want to beleive it ( isnt that a prejudiced approach on it's own but even if they person knows it is,isnt he supposed to change it? ...or maybe the case of doing the right thing is what we're looking at here and well i m not sure if people give a damn on whether its right or not? )
If one would like to base the assumptions on a single trait which is biased in the first place, why would you want to poke in the matter anyway?

Throughout our education system, we are told about doing the right thing or the development of logic in order to make us adept in finding out the right if the situation is new to us...but in society, these moral policies dont actually work.
Why does nobody want to follow them? why are they taught anyway?
Why is it taught to pull out a chair for a woman when the person who does it is considered "easy"
The society is built up on the fact as to how you're supposed to not listen to the right things and the society itself punishes you when you dont do the right things?

You know it makes me wonder what's the use of feelings?
Are feelings really there for everybody else than the person itself?
I mean how does it matter if I feel happy or sad if nobody else knows when I am happy or sad.
How does it change anything for I might think something to myself and then later change to something else? It was left to myself...so it didnt affect anything in this world. Expressions are for everybody else...like this blog.
I might want to type in what all I think but what's the point?
Like I asked somebody the other day...blogs arent for myself they are for somebody else because they are a form of expression
Now feelings are expressive in their own way and even if i feel happy right now how does it really matter?

If you have realised one peculiarity about things in life in general or through the studies in your school and out into college is the laws of equilibrium.
How lot of things obey the basic nature to be in the same state relatively or to be in the lowest state possible.
Balance.
thats the word we are looking for here.
Balance is one word we are constantly coming to terms with. Now coming back to the question of being contended.
One shouldnt be contended because it acts as inpiration but one should be contended to be happy to have what he has. Now if you disturb the balance, you're in for trouble.
Like you'll be doomed if you disturb the balance of greenhouse gases or you disturb the balanced mechanisms in your lab or whatever it may be.
You mess with equilibrium and it fucks you up....
Now if that thing is so important why don't we see more people trying to follow up?
I guess common sense is really an issue here or maybe it depends on perception.
For balance might mean different things to different people. Now even if thats true, is there no global definition to it? and if there isn't then why do your parents always highlight the fact as to how their offsprings are not balanced.
How does one tend to realise the definition of balance as applied to themselves?
Is it how their percieve their environment or how has the environment molded them?
I guess we ended up with more questions than we answered but then again philosophy is such...

Indian Education System: 60 years of stifling real thought

Standing in the auditorium of the first Indian Institute of Technology, Jawahar Lal Nehru addressed the crowd and said, “Here stands the fine monument of India, representing India's urges, India's future in the making. This picture seems to me symbolical of the changes that are coming to India.”

Today after more than sixty years of their existence, they are still trying to figure out the symbolism. Do they symbolize the frustrated youth who give up on the country and leave for better education? Do they symbolize for the better facilities which rank them nowhere on the global scale or is it the grossly outdated curriculum being pursued for generations. I am sure our first prime minister did not have that on his mind when he made that uplifting speech.

Over half a century has passed since then and we have ridiculously molded the meaning of education to suit our lazy attitudes towards it all. The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think - rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men. The Indian Education system has stifled this real thought, the thought that education should encourage the process of our curious intellect. The method of instruction has become such that it single handedly strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry. The domain of knowledge is to revolve around the teacher’s will and anybody who’s found straying is discouraged to the point that he gives up and learns to follow the “right procedure”. The procedure of rote learning and clearing examinations, which have become by far the single most important criterion to determine intelligence in this country.

A narrow approach to education has resulted in such a system that it professes no love for creativity. A system which leaves nothing open to exploration. As a consequence, students are brought up in such an environment that eventually leads them to decide within pre-conceived boundaries. The society also has led itself to believe that they can set the quality of an individual’s intellect by deciding which field he’s in. For being an engineer or a doctor puts you in category A, and anything else downgrades you to a person with seriously too much free time on his hands. Only if that wasn’t true enough for the category A in the first place.

Also if one would like to blame the population for his or her hapless situation, I would beg to differ. Our country has an immense pool of talent, those individuals who have honed their skills through intense competition and hard labor. For they are ready to work 18 hours a day to get closer to their aims. Such a ruthless environment has made them intrepid, ready to tackle any obstacles. Let’s face it. The fact of the matter remains that the only reason we might prepare for entrance examinations or our grades in college is to get a letter saying you’re hired. The education system has done nothing to elevate your value. Only being in this country has developed your set of skills to take up a task and strive for it. Have you been in situations which ended up giving you a high?
The word 'high' is subjectively used to loosely define the domain of anything that makes you thrilled and/or giving you goosebumps. It can be pretty much anything and depends on your interests but I hope you're not somebody who hasn't have had the exquisite experience of having that kind of feeling.

Well I am listening to this song, One more cup of coffee by bob dylan and it's got me thinking of a Feel instrument. The violin. Such a powerful instrument. Few strings and so much passion put into a continuous function of sounds that touches you right there. You can close your eyes and feel that amazing feeling passing inside you. That goosebumps sort of feeling that gives you a shiver.
It's an amazing sound, so real and so clear It sort of speaks to you. One of most amazing times i ve had is listening to a violin solo live in concert. That was pretty amazing. It makes you aware of the fact as to how much power that can withhold.
People have used to all sorts of techniques to inspire people to go to war,pursue riots, rise in revolution and music has definitely been part of it all. It touches that nerve that makes you tick. That pain or thrill in the sound of music. That feeling that tingles you. That sensation that can make the dormant part of you rise to something which might not be close to you would have imagined doing in your wildest dreams. Another thing that makes us human and anothing that that forms part of the complex world of feelings.

Feelings Part I

One of the most amazing and complex mechanism is of feelings and their connection to the thought process. Feelings that make us human. When you come out of the womb, the process is self-initiated. Therein, begins the life long journey of comprehending emotions and then re-enacting them in your life. People do understand the significance of such a thing and do all sorts of gimmicks to test your emotional quotient and what not.
Now what is most amazing about emotions is that they aren't very consciously developed. I am sure you didnt have to think to start loving your mom.
The best thing that has makes me think about this is the game called SIMS. If you haven't played this unusually addictive game, I'll summarize the gameplay for you. What you have to do is control people and their day to day activities and achieve some certain objectives to go higher up. Now I remember if i would talk to a person, he'd show a heart and his emotional attachment to that person increased or if he would stand in front of the mirror, his confidence could be increased so as to prepare for the job interview the next day.
You know it actually is that simple. Well we are trying to simplify it and not creating any paradox about it being complicated or simplistic in nature.

You can recall any incidence that has happened in your life just like that, and it can affect your mood to any extremes. It defies logic. You might not want it to change your mood but then it's not in your hands. You know objects are always in sort of an equilibrium-dynamic and static. Brain would definitely be a dynamic equilibrium. A pseudo equilibrium. It listen's to all parameters in the environment and processes. Processes and processes all the time. Even when your sleeping the events might as well be ordered or disordered into some sort of way. That might explain how you end up having dreams or nightmares. Atleast for me, anything that I have been thinking Too much about usually ends up in a dream too and mostly on the same night.

Do you need an outlet? A place where you're not bound by the invisible shackles formed. The shackles which finally move into place and bind you in. Did the walls in your room get tired of hearing your brain think? Did the fusion of instruments release you temporarily. But you still needed a greater outlet.
An outlet where you don't need to be accountable for anything. An outlet where you wouldn't need to be held responsible for the things said even though the things unsaid would spill. Did u kiss blarney's stone in your dreams? Did your teacher ever catch you for speaking too much? Do you feel lightened by that outburst of thoughts in your class. Did the kaleidoscope of thoughts finally get to you.
